Description

The Gimblett Gravels is one of the more unique wine regions in the wine world, with its boundaries specifically defined by soil type as opposed to geographical or political boundaries. The vines grow on a centuries-old dried river bed which provides an incredible complexity and uniqueness to the wines. The grapes used for Craggy Range’s cuvée is from heritage Syrah vines brought to New Zealand over 150 years ago. Craggy Range remains firm on their commitment to premium quality winemaking exemplified through the family’s dedication which includes placing the estate into a blind trust, meaning that it cannot be sold as it passes from generation to generation.

The Gimblett Gravels Syrah is typified by dense yet delicate flavours of boysenberry, violets and cracked pepper. Around 25% new oak is used on the wine, maintaining a fruit forward character with an approachability in both its youth and potential for aging in the cellar. 2018 represented a warm and dry summer for Hawke’s Bay, giving a wonderful fruit purity without losing its finesse.
