Who: Fabien Duveau
Where: Loire Valley, France
What: 100% Cabernet Franc

Fabien Duveau represents the 8th generation of his family estate, having taken the reigns in 2008. Upon joining the domaine, he introduced both organic and biodynamic viticultural practices to the domaine’s 40 parcels spread out over 20 hectares.

The distinctiveness of Les Hauts Poyeux, in addition to its the higher elevation, lies in its 60cm deep topsoil of the famed Poyeux sand before reaching its clay and limestone soil. In vinification, Les Hauts Poyeux sees a long maceration to bring forth the aromatics linked to this soil texture, followed by aging for 12 to 18 months in neutral barrique, to sublimate the aromatics and refine the fine tannins of the terroir.

Les Poyeux is known for producing some of the Loire's most revered expressions of Cabernet Franc, yet plots are commonly blended despite being comprised of two very distinctive terroirs. Les Bas Poyeux rests at the lower part of the of the Les Poyeux slope, with a complex soil which begins with 20 cm of sand above a distinctive limestone and clay subsoil. This leaves a prominent limestone imprint in the wines from this area, giving Les Bas Poyeux its "blood" side. To best elaborate the depth and complexity of this particular terroir, Duveau makes the choice to age the wine in a mix of concrete and neutral barrel.

Fabien Duveau represents the 8th generation of his family estate, having taken the reins in 2008. Upon joining the domaine, he introduced both organic and biodynamic viticultural practices to the domaine’s 40 parcels spread out over 20 hectares. His intense focus upon the vines leads to a truly deep dive and exploration of the intra-parcel individualities, with each of the bottlings being an expression of a parcel or part thereof. In addition to looking at vineyards in totality he also has two separate bottlings of Cabernet Franc from within the famed Les Poyeux vineyard, along with being the only producer to have a truly rare Chenin Blanc from the vineyard – from a mere 0.08 hectare parcel.

A gentle touch in the cellar is employed to let the individualities of the parcels shine through, with only a small addition of sulphur before bottling being the only addition through the winemaking process. The winery sits in the heart of the village of Chacé, near the famed Clos Rougeard, with its cellars in a century’s old tuffeau cave.
